Hello 2011

January 3, 2011

New Year’s resolutions are pretty pointless.  It’s like you’re setting yourself up to fail.  Though according to an article in the Miami Herald it’s still productive to make resolutions even if you never follow through.  I guess what annoys me the most is when people seem shocked after asking if you’ve made any and you replied with, “No.  I think they’re pretty pointless.”  You can tell by the slow-forming horrific expression spreading across their face you have been immediately classified as a derelict.

Goals are important.  I just don’t think you have to set out what you want to accomplish for the year right at its beginning.  How can you even set a goal when you have no idea if it will even be possible to achieve?  The only benefit to making goals at the beginning of the year is you have that much more time to procrastinate.

You also have to be careful to set goals you know you can achieve so you won’t end up hating yourself and feeling like even more of a failure when you are unsuccessful.  And i don’t mean easy goals that don’t require any hard work and dedication, but still, you can’t bake a cake if you never learned how to turn on the oven.

I do find it helpful to reflect on what i’ve learned and how my life has [especially this year, drastically] changed, and what sort of ideas i want to focus on and mistakes i do not want to repeat.  I also look at the people i’ve met.  Surprisingly, 2010 brought some kick-ass people into my life.  Of course, there are the few who didn’t quite fit the bill and will end up on the cutting room floor.

If nothing else, 2010 taught me how important it is to surround yourself with like-minded individuals, people you can be yourself around, who will make you laugh when you can’t seem to stop crying and would never call you crazy even when your emotions are running rampant.  Life is too short to be lollygagging around with people who are only going to bring you down.
